The fruit trees are filling baskets with plums and pears and apples which means it’s time to make our favorite Fall Orchard Crumble. The good news is this recipe works with all sorts of fruit combinations! If all you have is apples, then make it an Apple Crumble. If you have Peaches, add those in. The fruit will simmer and bake together into the most delicious mixture all with a decadent buttery Crumble topping to hold it all together. This is fall baking at it’s finest. As the crumble bubbles away it will fill your home with the sweetest spiced apple crumble scent.

It makes my heart so happy when our family walks into the house and says, it smells so good in here. It is the best reward for all the work and mess. It’s why I continue to fill pie pans and baking dishes, pots with simmering soup and bowlfuls of fresh roasted squash and beets and salad…all to fill our home and table in a way that calls our family together. So go grab all that extra fruit, hit the grocery store or farmers market and pick up an assortment of Apples, Pears, Plums and or Peaches. Let’s fill your home with the sweet spiced scent that calls your family together.

Orchard Crumble

  • 8 cups thickly chopped fruit : 4 cups peeled/sliced apples, 2 cups peeled/sliced pears, 2 cups halved/pitted plums or peaches

    • If you are only using apples, add 1/4 cup of apple juice or orange juice to this mix. Apples alone need more moisture to bake properly. There is no need to add fruit juice if you’re putting pears, plums or peaches in the mix!

  • 1/2 cup sugar

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 1/4 teaspoon all spice

  • 1/4 teaspoon cloves

Topping

  • 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour

  • 2/3 cups packed brown sugar

  • 6 tablespoons granulated sugar

  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 12 tablespoons softened butter

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Coat a 9 inch pie pan with nonstick cooking spray.

  • In a large bowl, mix the 8 cups of fruit with the sugar and spices. Stir until the fruit is evenly coated. Then transfer the fruit into the pie pan.

  • In a separate medium sized bowl, make the topping. Mix the flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and salt until combined. Use a pastry blender to work the butter in until the mixture is sticking together in coarse crumbles. Sprinkle the topping loosely over the fruit mixture.

  • Bake for 50 minutes or until the topping is browned in the middle and the sauce from the fruit mixture is bubbling.

  • Allow it to cool for 10-15 minutes, then serve with ice cream or whipping cream.
